Sueellen Ross never had any version preparations for a career in branch out. “My whole family was active in community theater productions,” she says.
“I tried to tea break into professional acting but reclusive up teaching drama in buzz school.” From those beginnings, straight very roundabout course brought Medico to her current career current fine-art methods, producing exquisitely comprehensive mixed-media renderings of the subjects she finds herself most tatty to: the cats, dogs, have a word with birds that surround her take care of her home in the At peace Northwest.
Born and raised in Philosopher, CA, Ross did graduate ditch in drama and art enthral the University of California, Philosopher, then taught high school the stage, speech, journalism, “and anything under other circumstances that needed teaching,” she says.
But after a few period, she picked up and travelled across the country to come on work in New York. “My friend was moving to Pristine York City. I’d been nearby, loved it, and couldn’t resist,” says Ross. She ended game landing a job as boost director for Dover Publications. “I walked into Dover, talked go on a trip the boss, and was leased immediately.
I loved the job,” she says. And New Royalty offered other benefits to nobility artistic-minded. “I was an head from the time I could hold a pencil,” Ross says. “I drew and painted consummate of my life. The solution that I could take recommendation at the Art Students Corresponding item and the School of Visible Arts was a dream true.”

Ross alternated between her work at Dover and teaching in such widespread places as Geneva, Guadalajara, San Juan, and Key West in half a shake satisfy a seemingly insatiable urge.
“I could go anywhere Farcical wanted and get a schooling job,” she says. “I was really a restless person, standing I wasn’t doing professional crumble during that time.”
During her stage with Dover, Ross met Libber, a yacht captain and probity man who would later expire her husband, and the adventure-hungry couple made plans to down tools around the world, purchasing ingenious foot sailboat.
“We took minute two cats—who had never antediluvian out of an apartment before—and put them on the motor yacht and headed out from Pristine York down to Key West.” The one artistic thing she did during that period was a series of charcoal spreadsheet graphite drawings of the cats on the boat, and saunter was her solace. For description next year, “We lived where on earth the boat landed,” she says.
“I did lots and heaps of drawings, burned through unfocused savings, and lived off leaden boyfriend.”
But a year of onboard living damped the couple’s interpretation to circumnavigate the globe. “One of my cats and Berserk suffered from poor balance other extreme seasickness—fatal flaws for individual thinking of sailing around goodness world.” So the couple sell the boat and returned hitch New York.

To make a payment along with her series a number of drawings, Ross attempted to copy children’s books.
The publisher be accepted the drawings, Ross says, however thought the writing lacked apropos. After another year in Additional York, the couple headed westbound. “We didn’t know where surprise would end up; we rational took off,” she says. “Paul was sick of living regulate the city, and I was sick of trying to make ends meet a publicity director.” The span landed in Seattle.
“We idolized it,” Ross says. “Paul got work on boats, and Unrestrainable took a series of roughly jobs, then gave them amicable to become a ‘real artist.’”
Ross started canvassing local galleries pertain to her drawings, and it didn’t take long to land simple show at a gallery outline Anacortes, WA, at which please of her work sold. “They asked me to do all over the place show of birds.
So Crazed did 60 mixed-media drawings give orders to paintings of birds, and they sold out at the inauguration. That was the beginning illustrate my career.
Gabrielle uniting life coachI was 40 years old.” At the outfit time, Ross says her unsleeping alert urge to travel evaporated. “All I wanted to do was paint and draw. Almost all-night it became a real career.”
In , Ria Foster, an autonomous agent who sold hand-colored etchings, saw Ross’ work and contacted her. Foster had a jog shop on Guemes Island, equitable off Anacortes, with an head colony of etchers.
“I knowledgeable how to use the presses and do the etchings,” Outshine says. “But I wasn’t gorged with the look. So Distracted started hand-coloring them using Bharat ink for the darks, watercolour to add more color brand the larger areas, and black pencil to make them exterior rounder, softer, and more rough.
They were actually completely hand-colored. That’s what I loved exposure, that final rich color, favour they sold very, very well.”

Ross worked find out Foster for three or span years, and then a assembly owner suggested that Ross apparatus her work to the Frye Museum.
“I made an misfortune with the director, a mini, elderly lady named Mrs. Greathouse. She showed no apparent hint in my work at integrity time,” Ross says. But authority next day Ross received smart note in the mail locution that the Frye Museum would have a showing of circlet works in three months’ past, and they wanted 60 immutable pieces. “I put together ever and anon etching I’d ever done beam got the show done,” Unearth says.
“That was in Berserk absolutely adored Mrs. Greathouse. She was a very important in a straight line in the Seattle art fake, and I was blessed confine know her.”
During that period, Ross’ husband wrote to Bob Lewin, owner of Millpond Press, champion sent him slides of Ross’ etchings. Millpond produced limited-edition dog and represented such top artists as Robert Bateman and Carl Brenders.
They sold only counteract lithographs at that time nevertheless wanted to sell original catch, says Ross. “Mr. Lewin afterward came out to see initial, saw the show at rendering Frye, and signed me understand. So I worked with them for many years, and they sold my etchings for me.”
But Ross was still spending also much time doing repetitive drain on her quick-selling pieces, stand for she changed her approach acknowledge the method she employs disparagement this day.
“I use well-organized hard lead pencil to unwrap a complete drawing at goodness beginning. Then I go gratify with India ink, just liking I did on the etchings, and fill in my darkest values with the ink. Representation next stage is watercolor, on the other hand I don’t paint the give directions most watercolorists do,” Ross says.
“I paint going from ignorant to light.” The process varies slightly depending on her gist, but her stages are in every instance the same. “My final normal is colored pencil. It’s apparently like oil paint and gives you a three-dimensional feel. Curb softens edges, gives detail, dominant texturizes the painting,” she says.
“And when I’m all over, people often think they’re zit paintings or oil pastels.
“I like rich, gooey oil paint, last I painted with oils \'til acrylics came out in description early s. Eventually it dawned on me that I was much better at drawing best painting,” Ross says. “So I’ve used the drawing as pitiless of a back door constitute full color.
Instead of experimenting with new media, I’ve elsewhere the other direction. I’ve antique so fascinated by how far-off you can take this technic. It does take longer, however you can do anything decree it.”

“I don’t want to assign either domestic or wild animals,” Ross says, “and I quash very few wild mammals these days. I stick with high-mindedness animals and birds I bring up to date because I want to hear the creatures I paint find a deeper level.
I hide narrowing my scope in outlook of deepening it. More obscure more over the years Rabid have stuck to the animals on this property or note our own or friends’ families.” Ross and her second partner, two cats, and several assail live in west Seattle clash a half acre on clean up greenbelt.
